Fundraising
Ideas and Tips Your
service work starts by raising awareness and funds ($650 required minimum with
an ultimate goal of raising $1000 by each person) to support the work of the Tibetan
Village Project. This money will be used to purchase medical and school supplies
that we will distribute in villages and to support ongoing TVP projects in Tibet.
TVP will be happy to help with fund-raising ideas, and provide materials and support.
Here some fundraising ideas and tips: 1.
Ideas for fundraising - DVD
PRESENTATION: The best and easiest way to tell the story of the Tibetan
Village Project and raise money is to show Tamdin’s Journey, one 18-min.
documentary to family members, friends, coworkers, and community or church members.
At the end, tell why you want to go to Tibet and be part of this mission. Ask
people to donate. For example, if you have 25 people in a session who each donates
$25, you just raised $625. Tibetan Village Project will he happy mail you a copy
of DVD, brochure and a sample invitation / flyer for the event.
- LETTER-WRITING:
Through letter-writing campaigns, you can utilize one of the easiest and most
direct fundraising methods available. Simply send letters to friends, family members,
employers, co-workers, clubs, churches, and other organizations that you feel
would be interested in assisting you in your volunteer endeavors. TVP has had
volunteers who have raised as much as $3000 dollars just by doing this. Pease
(1) make list of potential donors, (2) gather their contact information (address,
email or both), and (3) personalize the sample fundraising letter that TVP will
provide.
- LOCAL
BUSINESSES: Local businesses are very likely to make a contribution to
your volunteer cause. You may want to approach the business with a letter first,
enclosing all relevant materials and a pledge form. Then, follow up the proposal
with a phone call or personal meeting. For a positive example of local businesses
that support international volunteers, one volunteer's program was funded through
a grocery store because the store was pleased just to have the publicity.
- SALES:
A traditional way to raise money is through bake sales, arts and crafts sales,
candy sales, garage sales, and just about any type of sale that interests you.
If you know someone who is a baker, an artist, or a published writer, you can
ask them if they would like to donate their creations, so that you may allot the
sale towards your fundraising program. TVP has some gift items such as Tibetan
calligraphy that you are welcome to use.
- RAFFLES:
For a raffle, groups can obtain donated items from local stores, companies, and
restaurants. A fundraiser can use these items and raffle them off, usually at
a larger event such as a dance. If there are no large items to raffle off, sometimes
groups buy their own - like a television or a stereo. As long as the proceeds
are higher than the purchase price, raffles are effective methods of fundraising.
- MEDIA:
Perhaps one of the best ways to promote awareness and to raise funds
for your upcoming Tibet adventure is through utilizing the local media. You can
circulate the enclosed press announcement to publications with which you may be
affiliated, such as your hometown newspaper, alumni magazines, church bulletins,
or any organization bulletins. Having a short piece published is a wonderful start
on your fundraising quest.
2.
How to manage raised funds - please ask donors to make checks payable
to the Tibetan Village Project and have them send it to your address so you can
(1) send thank you cards and donation receipts (we will show you how to do this),
(2) keep track of money you raised, and (3) keep contact information for future
correspondence (e.g. sharing your story of your trip or inviting people for a
slide show). You can send a few checks at a time to TVP for making deposits.
